Times have changed and so should your sales approach…

In 2020 the way we approach sales has changed in away that might never seem the same. because of this your sales approach in 2021 need to make a huge shift. Navigating sales and selling in 2021 might seem overwhelming but it does not have to be.

There is a new energy emerging through the COVID crisis, and people are craving connection, truth, and authenticity more than ever before.

If the thought of selling makes you uncomfortable you are not alone!

Why would it? No one ever has said, I sure do love that smooth and pushy sales person…yet we still think that is who we need to become to get the job done?  What? This makes no sense.

It is no wonder that there is such a stigma around selling. Who would want to be good at those insincere and aggressive tactics and strategies? Yet people still seem to think this is the ONLY way to have a successful sales conversation and nothing could be further from the truth.  

Now is the time to make a shift in YOUR sales approach

Navigating your business sales post 2020 is for sure a different animal, but making these three shifts will help you do so with ease. You don’t have to be perfect, smooth, and have all the answers:  People are tired of the fake it to you make it confidence.  It is so obvious, and it leads to mistrust.  Better to be real, authentic, and imperfect, you know, like a real human.  People love seeing this, it helps them connect and identify with you and your offer even more.  Why do you think everyone loves blooper reels and behind the scenes footage because it gives an insight into what the person is REALLY like.  It gives them a glimpse of authenticity, it is a breath of fresh air, in a world that has told us we all have to be perfect and polished.  Your authentic self is what you want to bring to them… in the words of my favorite protein bar out there, no BS!  Will your authentic and unique personality be a match for everyone, well no, but we don’t need everyone to be our customer, and that is where an abundance mindset must come in (link to abundance mindset in sales the kryptonite of rejection).

Three Ways to Shift Your Sales Approach in 2021:

1. Skip the script: 

People don’t want to know that you are good at memorizing and regurgitating, they want to know that whatever you have to offer will help truly help THEM. People can also tell immediately if you are giving a canned message.  They are buying YOU and the emotions YOU are evoking in them around what it is you have to offer, not some spiel.  Give yourself permission to speak from your heart, to truly listen to the person who is in front of you and have a real and imperfect conversation. 

2. Connection is key: 

If there is any advice for truly changing the outcome of any sales conversation it is connection. Connection is the number one game changer. But in order to arrive at a true connection you really do have to give yourself permission to be YOU. How well can you connect with someone authentically if you are pretending to be someone else, some “salesperson”? How comfortable are you going to feel? How well can you truly connect with someone if you are working off a memorized script or canned message? We can all smell the insecurity and desperation in that, and NO ONE is buying that.  Okay, so hopefully I have made my point. 

3. Connection to customer:

Here is where we let go of the usual sales “MO” and set the intention to connect with our customer, this is where the magic happens.  To connect you have to listen with zero strings attached. You must become a master of the thoughts in your head trying to monopolize and take control of the conversation and the dollar signs.  People buy when they truly feel understood, so you must listen intently. Really hear what they are communicating with you and address their questions and concerns accordingly.  They want a dialogue not a monologue of how great you and your products are. Don’t just act like you care, find it in your heart and soul to truly care. This takes practice but it begins with seeing each potential customer, not as a dollar sign, but as a human being, a human being just like you.

Shifting your sales mindset in this direction, will massively up level YOUR sales conversation and your bottom line. 

You DO NOT have to become someone else in order to be successful at sales. You DO have to connect with your inner confidence by tapping into your true nature and knowing that you are enough. Just like we tell our children, “You are unique and your are special, there will never be another, just like you, so be yourself!”  So take your own advice and USE IT! 

As transformational sales coach, that it is obvious to me that the “old school” sales model is not working anymore and probably never did.
